Ceramic plaque, 'Maya Ball Player in Ochre'

Surrounded by hieroglyphs, an ancient ball player demonstrates his skill and strength. The ball game represented the movements of the heavens for many pre-Hispanic peoples and, for the Maya, the game had a religious significance. Angel Cer�n recreates an archeological piece from Chinkultic, Chiapas. Once thought to be a calendar, as the glyphs represents dates, it is one of the first ball court markers discovered.
